The Postman's Knock
by
Harry Lloyd
Hello whats that, the old man said,
As slowly he crept out of bed,
And peeping out of the bedroom door,
He found a letter on the floor,
I wonder who has thought to write,
And held the letter to the light,
I'll have to find my spec's, he said,
And slowly got back into bed,
He tore it open there to see,
A card--his anniversary,
With visions of his wedding day,
When he was married in the month of May,
Then talking to himself, he said,
While looking at the empty bed,
I wonder what the wife would say,
If she were here this very day?
A little tear sprang in his eye,
He thought he was about to cry,
Thinking it was all for the best,
His dearest wife was laid to rest,
He looked towards the bedroom door,
The card fell down upon the floor,
He sighed: Ah, memories will keep,
And closed his eyes and went to sleep.
